History of Carrick CastleCarrick Castle was a royal stronghold and held by the Earls of Argyll, and was one of their
three chief castles in addition to Duart and Fincharn, and Mary Queen of Scots visited here
in 1563.
A battle in 1685 between Archibald Campbell against King James VII resulted in the keep
losing its roof, which was never replaced for tax purposes. Carrick’s keep remained a ruin for
many years, but is now in private ownership and being restored. Aside from the keep, Carrick Castle is now an impressive ruin open to the public.
