History of MacLellan's CastleMacLellan's Castle was completed in 1582 by Thomas MacLellan of Bombie. On the land
there stood a convent, which Thomas MacLellan demolished and whose stones, along with stones from a former castle on this site, were used to construct MacLellan’s Castle.
The 16th century residence is a grand domestic structure was built for leisure rather than
war, with several kitchens and a well-preserved area of dark vaults which conveys the
working conditions of the family’s servants. Only this and the first floor of the structure
remain today, the upper floors are a hollow shell of what was once a grand house with
sweeping views of the town of Kirkcudbright.
MacLellan’s Castle is now in the hands of Historic Scotland, open from April through
September and closed in the winter season.
