Morton Castle, Dumfries and Galloway
Location: DG3 5GH (map and directions) ![]() Morton Castle - Wikimedia Commons History of Morton CastleWhile a previous castle did stand here in 1307, the one which remains today was built by
the Earls of Morton in the mid 15th century. The structure would have looked very similar to
nearby Caerlaverock Castle, with triangular walls around a central courtyard. Today Morton
Castle stands in ruins, but the western tower that remains would have formed part of an
impressive gatehouse. The structure was captured and burned in 1588 during James VI’s
battle against John, 8th Lord Maxwell, after which ownership changed hands back to the Morton family. Morton Castle then was sold several times throughout the 17th and early
18th century, until it was abandoned. Map and directionsView Morton Castle in a larger map |
