Dundonald Castle, Ayrshire & Arran
Location: Dundonald, KA2 9HD (map and directions) ![]() Dundonald Castle © Derek Ferris History of Dundonald CastleDundonald Castle was built in the 13th century on what appears to be remains of an even earlier stone castle, for Robert II after his ascension to the throne in 1371. Robert II also died here in 1390, and this castle remained a royal residence for the next 150 years. Dundonald was sold to the Cathcarts by King James III in 1482, and the castle changed hands once more to the Wallaces in 1526. However, by the end of the 17th century, the castle was in ruins.
