Culross Palace, Fife
Location: KY12 8JH (map and directions)
Culross Palace, located in the town of Culross, near Valleyfield, was constructed between
1597 and 1611 by Sir George Bruce, the Laird of Carnock, who was a very successful
merchant in international trade, especially coal mining, and the materials used in the
construction of Culross came from foreign trade, including Baltic pine and Dutch floor tiles.

History of Culross PalaceThe Palace was never a royal residence, instead a private home during the 16th and 17th
centuries at a time when the then flourishing royal burgh of Culross had in part Sir George
Bruce to thank. James VI visited the Palace in 1617.
Culross Palace is now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, who has re-created
a model 17th century home and garden where even the herbs, vegetables and fruit trees
are those that would have been found in the early 1600s. Culross is open to the public.
