Wemyss Castle, Fife
Location: Red House, East Wemyss, Kirkcaldy KY1 4TE (map and directions)
Wemyss Castle, which overlooks the Firth of Forth, is a privately owned residence which,
since its royal connection to Mary Queen of Scots, has received royal visits throughout
the years, including the Queen. Two interesting points of note are the tower re-used as a
windmill and an egg-shaped dungeon within the castles which is connected to the building
by a 30m zigzag passage.

History of Wemyss CastleSituated on cliffs between East Wemyss and West Wemyss in Fife, Wemyss Castle was
built in 1421 by Sir John Wemyss and is known as the ancient seat of the Earls of Wemyss.
Wemyss Castle is perhaps better known, however, as the location where Lord Darnley met
his future wife, Mary Queen of Scots in 1565.
