History of Kisimul CastleConstruction of the small medieval Kisimul Castle on the island of Barra was started by Naill
of Barra around the year 1039.
In 1838 the Isle of Barra was sold, and Kisimul Castle was abandoned. The castle deteriorated
continuously until the remains of the castle (and the island of Barra) were purchased in 1937
by the chief of Clan MacNeill. Restoration of the castle ensued, and in 2001 the chief leased
Kisimul Castle to Historic Scotland for 1000 years at the price of £1 and a bottle of whisky.
Kisimul Castle can be reached only by boat from Castle Bay Kismul is open to the public from April to the end of September.
