History of Torosay CastleTorosay Castle is a large house designed by architect David Bryce for John Campbell, completed in 1858. John Campbell sold the castle to Arbuthnot Charles Guthrie in 1865, who used the
house as a getaway from his London life as a successful businessman. Torosay Castle is
privately owned by the Guthrie family and today serves as the seat for the Clan Guthrie.
The gardens are home to 19 statues which are considered by experts to be one of the finest
examples of 18th century statues outside of Italy. Visitors to the gardens can take part in a
Statue Walk to visit each of the statues which were rescued by Walter Murray Guthrie, from a
deserted garden near Milan.
Inside Torosay, visitors can see family portraits, antique furniture, and even photos of
Winston Churchill, who often visited the castle. Torosay Castle and its gardens are open to the public, with the Guthrie family living on the
upper floors of the castle.
