Lews Castle
History of Lews Castle The fort is an impressive
structure, complete with towers and battlements, and sits on a seemingly infinite 64,000
acres of woodland.
Lews remained his property until 1918 when it was bought by soap baron, William Lever, Lord
Leverhulme, an industrialist who then gifted the castle to the people of Stornoway in 1923.
Lever added modern conveniences such as electric lighting, telephones and central heating
before gifting the estate.
Lews Castle served as accommodation for air force personnel and marines during World War
II and for students from Lews Castle College in the 1950s.
Today Lews is owned by the local council and is a Category A listed building. Lews Castle is closed to the public, though its castle grounds are open to the public year round.
